A signed driver is displayed as unsigned in Windows 7 or in Windows Server 2008 R2

When checking the properties of some drivers on my Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 installation i noticed that one of my network drivers were displayed as being unsigned. Normally i use only drivers that come from the manufacturer and are signed. Weird.

When checking online i found this KB from Microsoft.

Unsigned driver

It states that even if you install a Windows Hardware Quality Labs (WHQL) driver, it may display as being unsigned when checking the driver details once installed.

According to Microsoft this error is because of incorrect logic when the Authenticode flag in the catalog file of the driver is checked.

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in the KB article.

This error can occur on the following Operating Systems:

  • Windows 7
  • Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1)
  • Windows Server 2008 R2
  • Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 (SP1)

Registry information

To use the hotfix in this package, you do not have to make any changes to the registry.

Restart requirement

You must restart the computer after you apply this hotfix.

I hope this was informative for you.
